There’s something bold about changing careers. Whether you’re doing it out of necessity or by choice, whether it’s the first time or the third, it takes guts. It also makes you a far more interesting person (just a personal opinion).
I work with a lot of people who are shifting paths. Sometimes it's a move from the classroom to edtech. Sometimes it's a nonprofit professional trying to break into corporate social impact. Other times it's someone leaving the federal government after 15 years wondering what comes next. Every time, the same question comes up: How do I explain this?
My advice? Look for the throughline.
That switch you're making might seem abrupt on paper. The job titles might not match, and the industries might not talk to each other but if you zoom out, there’s usually something that connects the dots. A theme. A skill. A value. A problem you kept trying to solve, even if the setting changed.
That’s your throughline. That’s your story.
When someone asks, "Why this job?" or "Why now?" or the classic, "Tell me about yourself," they’re not just looking for a list of titles. They want to hear what drives you. What connects your past to your present. What future you’re reaching for.
So if you're making a shift, don’t hide from the changes but instead name them. Then name the constant that’s guided you through them.
