How to Use LinkedIn Without Hating It
Are you one of those people who think LinkedIn is “cringe”? It’s okay, I get it. I used to be one of you until it actually helped me grow my network, land jobs and contracts, learn more about my industry, and keep growing in my career. So let’s make LinkedIn feel less painful and more useful.
Here are some of my favorite ways to use LinkedIn:
1. First of all, do you have dark mode turned on?
Because I need dark mode on everything. LinkedIn does not make this easy to find so here’s a quick step by step:
Click on the “Me” dropdown
Go to Settings and Privacy
Then Account Preferences
Under Display you’ll see Dark Mode
Click that and select “Always on.”
This alone might improve your whole experience, reduce eye strain, and maybe even help you enjoy being on this platform.
2. Now that our eyes are happy, let’s talk about what to post
I get this question all the time: “What am I supposed to post? Should I say I’m looking for a job?”Ideally, you share what you know about your field. Think of LinkedIn as a place to talk about your observations, trends you see, things you’re learning, or patterns you’re noticing in your industry. If you work in public health and keep up with what’s happening in the world, you probably have thoughts or a take. Where do you put that? LinkedIn!Share it. Comment on other posts. Be bold. When you post more of this type of content, you attract people in similar spaces and suddenly your network is full of folks who care about the same things you do. That’s how people network in 2025. Less doomscrolling about the job market, more sharing what you know.
3. Looking for jobs in the Jobs tab is cute, but let’s level up
Here’s the advanced way. In the search bar type in your field plus the word hiring. Using our example, type “public health hiring.”Then click on Posts. You’ll immediately see people outside your current network who are sharing roles on their own teams. Like, comment, interact. LinkedIn will start feeding you even more of this content. This is one of the fastest ways to find freshly posted jobs before they hit the big boards.
4. If your headline is “Title at Company” you’re missing out
You do not need to promote your employer (unless you’re in sales and that’s your actual job).If you’re a job seeker, your headline should promote you.Think of it as a snapshot that connects where you’ve been with where you’re going:Broad Title | Skill | Skill | Industry | IndustryNot too long, easy to skim, and perfect for people like us who scroll quickly while trying to spot our future colleagues.
5. Stop doomscrolling
I know it’s easy to open LinkedIn ten times a day, scroll, panic, repeat. Don’t do this to yourself.Set aside 30 minutes at the end of the day to check posts and jobs from the last 24 hours. There’s even a filter for that. This will make your search calmer and a lot more productive.
If you want more support, clarity, or strategy in your search, you don’t have to do this alone. You can work with me or any of the amazing coaches listed on our site. We’re here to help you stay focused, build momentum, and move into a role that feels right for you.
