Do Good Work. Get Paid Well
What's Your Why?
If you're a millennial like me, you're somewhere around the halfway point of life and the existential "wait, why am I doing this again?" has probably hit at least once. Whether you're questioning your why, feeling disconnected from it, or just ready to recommit to it, this one's for you.
Why do you do the work you do? And how did you figure out that this is the topic you care most about?
More often than not, it connects back to something deeply personal. Something from your past. People pour themselves into education reform because they know firsthand that their own educational foundation is what shaped their economic mobility. People show up fiercely for reproductive rights because it's tied to something they or someone they love has had to navigate. People dedicate their careers to specific health issues because of a diagnosis, a loss, a story that never left them.
So start there. What is your why? Why are you drawn to this topic? And where in your life does it connect back to? Or better yet, who does it connect back to?
Look Across All the Domains of Your Life
Your paid work is just one piece of the puzzle. Your "why" tends to show up everywhere, not just in your job title.
Think about your relationships, your personal time, and yourself as a learner all at once. What topics keep coming up in conversations with people you care about? What are you reading without anyone asking you to? What hobbies or passions circle back to the same themes? Where do you feel most lit up and engaged?
Now connect the threads. What shows up across your work life, your relationships, your personal time, and your learning? Those common threads? That is your signal.
What Is Fueling You Right Now?
The news is hard. The cycle is relentless. Things are happening fast, and it is a lot to carry.
Social impact professionals feel this weight in a particular way. It takes a certain kind of person to work in this sector, someone who is deeply empathetic and genuinely moved by the issues of our time. That is a gift, but it can also be heavy.
And for some of you, it is not just the news cycle that is heavy. It is the uncertainty of your own career — the grant that did not get renewed, the org that restructured, the job search that is taking longer than expected. That is real, and it is a lot. But here is the thing: your why does not disappear when your job title does. It is actually the clearest compass you have when everything else feels uncertain.
One way to keep that weight from crushing you is to flip the question. Instead of asking "how do I cope with all of this," ask: what is actually fueling you right now? What are you reading that gets you fired up? What issue makes you want to do something about it?
That energy is information. Use it.
Figure Out Your Next Step
Once you know what's fueling you, think about how you want to show up. What organizations are already doing this work? How can you plug in? What unique skill or gift do you bring to the table? Can you help with fundraising, technology, partnerships, communications, or something else entirely?
And if you are not ready to make it your full-time focus but you still care deeply, that is completely okay. You can still show up. Volunteer. Donate. Amplify. There are more ways to contribute than just your 9-to-5.
The news cycle will keep spinning. But knowing your why and knowing what still lights you up is how you stay in the game.
If you’re feeling uncertain about what’s next, I’d love to help!
Trends: This week's roles are heavy on senior leadership. Think Directors, Managing Directors, and VPs. Partnerships, strategy, and program management are showing up across multiple organizations, signaling that the sector is investing in people who can build relationships and drive growth right now.
