Case Study: Landing a Dream Role While Working Full Time

People often say that job searching feels like a full time job. That can be true, as it takes discipline, dedication, and the willingness to keep showing up, even after getting hit with the dreaded “not moving forward” emails.
Some of my favorite moments as a coach come from working with people who are still employed and carving out time to look for something better with our help. I think it has to do with finding structure within an already full calendar, along with the incredible feeling of seeing people leave lousy employers behind for better pay and meaningful work (yes, the pettiness, but stay with me here).
One of our recent clients was in that exact position. She had a full time job that wasn’t going anywhere. There were no promotions, the pay was low for her level of experience, and the growth potential was limited. Outside of work, she had a busy family life with kids and plenty of responsibilities.
Early in our work together, we built a structure that made the process sustainable. We created a weekly rhythm for submitting applications, following up, and checking in. We stopped tailoring every resume for every job and instead designed a few versions she could send quickly when promising roles appeared. We prioritized based on both interest level and posting date to help her apply early.
Our partnership made the biggest difference. In addition to job search coaching, we also scout roles for our clients. Having a second set of eyes on the job market means you don’t have to catch everything yourself. Sometimes the roles you scroll past are the very ones your coach flags and says, “This one has your name all over it.”
She landed an incredible offer with the perfect title, a mission-driven organization in the environmental and climate space, a strong salary, and 100% remote flexibility. We negotiated the offer together and achieved everything she hoped for.
