How to apply early without burning out

There's so much advice out there right now about the importance of applying early, and rightfully so. I've seen it happen with the people I'm working with. As soon as they shift this one part of their strategy and start applying earlier, they are more likely to land interviews.

Why is this happening? Is this new?

Well, it's not necessarily new. If you think about the most competitive organizations out there (a quick scan of Glassdoor's Best Places to Work list) and talk to their recruiters, they'll tell you this has been the norm for a while. Early applicants get prioritized because recruiters are reviewing open roles daily and moving the right candidates forward as quickly as they can.

In today's broader job market, this trend has become even more pronounced. Now that most candidates can generate a targeted resume and cover letter quickly, companies that weren't used to high application volumes are suddenly seeing far more applicants than they expected. The result? Recruiters panic, close the role early, and move forward with whoever is already in the pipeline.

For this reason, I think the market will continue to prioritize early applicants. It's just the stage we're in right now, and while people have been talking about how the resume and cover letter process is outdated and needs to change, not much has actually improved yet. I don't see it going away anytime soon.

Either way, what this means for you as a candidate is simple: applying early needs to be your focus.

How to do it without losing your mind

A quick way to burn out is to doomscroll all day, frantically searching for roles so you don't miss anything. I don't recommend this.

What I recommend instead is setting aside 30 minutes at the end of your day to look for what was posted in the last 24 hours. This way, you'll catch everything that went up that day and still apply well within the early applicant window. When you find a role that's a good fit, apply right then and there using your ready-to-go targeted resume. No waiting until tomorrow, no saving it for the weekend. The whole point of having that resume ready is so you can move fast when it counts.

LinkedIn Jobs is a great place to find new postings, but here's my favorite tip for the people I'm working with: go to the Posts tab on LinkedIn and search the keywords of what you're looking for plus the word "hiring" at the end. You'll surface what people are publicly posting about openings on their own teams. This works especially well for roles at small to mid-size companies, where individual managers are more likely to post directly. It's one of the most underused job search moves out there.
