New Year - Annual Goal Setting

I’ve been using some version of this annual planning guide for the past six years, and I keep coming back to it for one reason: it actually helps me stay engaged with my goals throughout the year, not just inspired for a week in January.

Over time, I’ve realized I have two core philosophies when it comes to planning for the new year.

The first: I don’t believe in manifestation. I believe in action.

Writing something down doesn’t make it real. What makes it real is being clear about what you want and then being equally clear about what you’re going to do to set it in motion. If you have a goal, list it. Then list the actions you’ll take to move it forward. Not everything at once. Not perfectly. Just intentionally.

I also believe that if you don’t revisit your plan, it might as well not exist. That’s why I come back to mine every three or four months to see what’s actually happening. What’s moving. What’s stalled. What I need to adjust based on the reality of my life, not the fantasy version I had in January.

This is also why the template lives in a Google Doc.

I’m not going to force you into Notion. I’m not giving you a complicated system that requires onboarding, tutorials, or sustained motivation just to maintain. The tool should get out of the way so you can edit it, add to it, and come back to it when you need to. Simple is a feature, not a limitation.

My second philosophy is about balance.

Annual planning works best when you engage multiple domains of your life at the same time. You can’t just plan for your career and expect everything else to magically hold. You can’t focus only on relationships while ignoring health or money and then wonder why the year feels stressful.

The years that have felt best to me weren’t the ones where I went all-in on a single area. They were the years where I stayed somewhat intentional across multiple domains: career, relationships, family, spirituality, health, finances, and yes, also books I wanted to read and trips and experiences I wanted to have.

Not all equally. Not all at the same pace. But all acknowledged.

That’s what this planning process is for. Not to optimize your life. Not to rank priorities. Not to create another way to feel behind.

It’s a way to be more active in your year instead of reactive. A place to name what you’re choosing to work on, tend, and revisit as the year unfolds.
