The nonprofit sector has long been shaped by a culture of scarcity. We’ve been told that every dollar should go “to the cause,” and that staff salaries are overhead to be minimized. Pair that with the personal values that attract many of us to this work such as humility, service, community and you get a dangerous mix: leaders who are underpaid and convinced that’s just “how it is.”
The sector is shifting. Senior roles in philanthropy, climate, education, and democracy-building are coming in at six-figure salaries, sometimes well into the $200Ks. The demand for strong leaders hasn’t gone away, and the pay is reflecting that.
