It’s time to modernize the cover letter.
No one is reading your two-page life story anymore (unless you’re in academia, government, or a field that still expects longer formats). For most nonprofit, social impact, and corporate jobs, a short, sharp letter is far more effective.
So what does that look like? Four paragraphs. That’s it.
Paragraph 1: The Intro
Who are you, what role are you applying for, and why? Keep it direct, keep it human.
Paragraph 2: Highlight #1
Take the most important qualification or responsibility from the job posting. Then connect the dots: what did you do, where did you do it, and how well did you do it? (Specifics beat buzzwords every time.)
Paragraph 3: Highlight #2
Pick the next most important qualification and repeat the formula. Again, think concrete example > vague adjectives.
Paragraph 4: The Close
Re-state your interest in the role, thank them for their consideration, and leave it at that.
That’s your cover letter. Clear, relevant, and respectful of attention spans.

Seeing a ton of senior leadership roles this week in ops, strategy, and program management plus the usual suspects in comms and development.
Salary ranges are sliding down a bit. Feels like nonprofits and social impact orgs know there are plenty of candidates in the market right now. The good news however is that we’ve had multiple clients negotiate $10–$15K above the posted range.
So don’t let the numbers scare you off, the listed salary isn’t always the final word.
