I love when people “nonprofit.”

The care, the purpose, the strategy, the impact — it’s all there, and it’s powerful. Most of the people I work with in this space are deeply committed to making the world better, and they’ve done incredible things to prove it.

Lately, I’ve been noticing something.

A lot of resumes, LinkedIn profiles, and even practice interview answers are overflowing with buzzwords. Instead of making someone’s work sound more impressive, those buzzwords actually hide the real accomplishments and the person’s actual capabilities.

It happens everywhere:

  • A resume says “leveraged cross-sector synergies to optimize mission-critical initiatives” instead of “partnered with three school districts to expand free lunch programs to 2,500 more kids.”

  • A LinkedIn summary describes someone as a “purpose-driven, dynamic, impact-oriented leader” without a single sentence about what they’ve actually led or achieved.

  • An interview answer lists every possible keyword from the job posting, but never tells a clear story of a win.

The problem is, we live in a short attention span culture. If you’re not direct about your work, people will tune out and move on to the next person who is. You can have the most impressive track record in the world, but if it takes too much work to figure out what you’ve done, that impact gets lost.

So what’s the fix?

Be specific. Cut the fluff. Say what changed because of you. Forget the filler and the buzzwords.

Instead of “developed and implemented mission-aligned strategic priorities across stakeholders,” try: “Led a team of five to design and launch a workforce training program that helped 120 adults earn new certifications and secure jobs within six months.”

Instead of “leveraged innovative solutions to maximize operational efficiencies,” try:“Introduced a new tracking system that reduced client wait times by 40%.”

The difference? Anyone, whether they’re in your field or not, can instantly understand the value you bring.

You have the experience. Put it in words that leave no doubt about your excellence.Need help articulating your wins? Book an initial call with me here.
